Etiology and Precipitation Factors
Exact etiology of UGAP pain syndrome is not known. Several different causes are mentioned like infection, impaired circulation, venous congestion and nerve entrapment. In out series we feel that the majority of our patient’s problem can be explained as tendonitis (enthesopathy). Ninety-three (46%) patients gave history of lower abdominal surgeries, most common being hysterectomies, C-sections, bladder suspension. Nineteen males gave history of previous groin hernia surgeries. (Graph 1) “Think of UGAP pain syndrome when presented with unexplained dyspareunia, especially when present after hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.”
